About The Host

Tim “lion_king_300” Watanabe has recently graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Journalism. He currently works part time as a casino dealer near his hometown of Kirkland, Washington.

Tim is no stranger to the Internet Game show scene. He was the host of Yahoo! Net Press Your Luck for over nine months. The show ran from Summer of 2001 to the Spring of 2002 and saw hundreds of thousands of virtual dollars given away to ‘Net contestants around the country. He is also a real-life game show champion himself, winning $36,830 on the American version of Wheel of Fortune in October 2004.

He is a devoted Lion King fan – he has over 750 items in his award-winning TLK collection and has been fortunate enough to have seen The Lion King on Broadway a total of eight times in six different cities worldwide. Tim hopes that hosting WWTBKOTPL will give him an opportunity to share his love for the TLK series and TLKOB with others and give fellow TLK fans a chance to show off their knowledge of and enthusiasm for the film, in the hopes that the memory of this great Disney masterpiece will live on forever.

Rules

1. At the beginning of the show, all audience members will be asked a “Fastest-Finger” type question and be given 15 seconds to answer. The first audience member to correctly type the answers in the correct order will play in the “Hot Seat.” Everyone participating in the “Fastest-Finger” round will type their answers into the main chat box.

1b. Types of Fastest Finger Questions

Ordering: Contestant must put the four given answers A B C and D in the correct order. Same format as the FF questions used on the U.S. version of Millionaire.

Pick Four: Contestant must pick the four correct answers out of the seven answers given. Answers may be submitted in any order.

1c. Contestants may submit their answers for Fastest Finger questions more than once. The last answer given by each player will be their “final” answer.

2. If a contestant were to reach the $1,000 or $32,000 level they would be guaranteed to leave with that much virtual money.

3. Audience members not in the Hot Seat are encouraged to remain silent in the duration of a question. They may feel free to comment or chat in between questions, but may not offer any advice or say anything related to the question being asked.

4. Once the host has finished reading a question and the think music begins, the contestant will have forty-five (45) seconds to give an answer, or choose to use a “Lifeline”. A warning will be given when 10 seconds remain on the game clock. If an answer is not given in the allotted time, the contestant will be disqualified and sent back to the previous milestone on the prize level chart. While lax on the timer in previous seasons, I will more strictly enforce the game clock in Season 3.

5. Once a game, a contestant may use his/her “Time Extension”. This gives the contestant an extra thirty (30) seconds to ponder an exceedingly challenging question. Once the time-extension has been used, by a particular player, it may not be used again for the remainder of the game. The contestant calls for the extension by typing “TIME” or something similar in the chat box. Once “TIME” has been called 30 seconds will immediately be added to the clock.

6. For questions at the $2,000 level and above, the host must confirm with the contestant that the answer chosen is indeed the “FINAL” answer before it is locked into the computer.

7. For the $1,000,000 question, each contestant will have a bonus 15 seconds to think, giving them a total of one minute on the game clock for this question.

The Lifelines

1. 50:50 – I will randomly take away two of the wrong answers, leaving one wrong answer and the correct one.

2. Ask the Audience – Audience participation! Everyone in the “studio” at the time will vote on the correct answer by simply typing in “A” “B” “C” or “D” and sending me a Private Message with their vote. After everyone has voted I will tally up the votes and give percentages for the contestant. Audience members will NOT be permitted to give their votes in the chat box..

3. Phone-A-Friend – The contestant in the Hot Seat will specially select ONE member of the studio audience for help on a particular question. They will be able to talk together for thirty additional seconds about the question once the host gives the signal. At the end of thirty seconds, the “Phone-A-Friend” must stop talking and the contestant will have twenty (20) more seconds to give an answer or choose to use another lifeline.

4. Double Dip – This Lifeline will be in play once the contestant reaches the $32,000 level. It will enable the contestant to be able to choose TWO of the four possible answers instead of just one. Once the contestant decides to use the Double Dip, he/she must commit to answering both times (i.e. can’t choose one answer and walk away). Once the contestant commits to using the Double Dip, he/she will not be able to use any other lifeline on that question.

After any lifeline is used, the contestant will be given twenty (20) more seconds to choose an answer or to use a lifeline.

High Score List/Prizes

1. Since WWTBAMM TLK Version will be an ongoing game, I will keep statistics on individual players that make it to the hot seat (overall winnings, etc) as well as single-game records. The first player to accumulate 1 million dollars in virtual earnings will receive a piece of TLK merchandise courtesy of the show, postage and handling included!

1b. Should a player achieve the $1,000,000 milestone in one game by answering all 11 questions correctly, he/she will win a bonus prize chosen by the host, which will be revealed during the game’s closing ceremonies. It is guaranteed to hold a retail value of at least $10 USD.

2. No actual money will be given out. Players that win the $1,000,000 Grand Prize by answering all 11 questions correctly get crowned “King/Queen of the Pride Lands” and will forever be enshrined in the Pride Land Hall of Fame!

Location and Game Times

Yahoo! is one of the safest, most secure web servers around so you don’t need to worry about your privacy. Once you have an account, you can download Yahoo! Instant Messenger free from their website.

2. Games will be held every Sunday at 2pm Pacific Standard Time. This equates to 5pm Eastern Standard Time and 10pm Greenwich Meridian Time (London). If you live outside of these time zones, please use those guides to figure out when WWTBKOTPL will be played in your hometown.

Shortly before game time, a Yahoo! IM Voice Conference room will be made by either the host or one of the players. At approximately 2:00, all available players will be invited into the conference room for the start of the first game. Latecomers are welcome.

Other Rules

1. The show is scheduled to last one hour. How many contestants we get to depends on how smoothly things roll along on the show, and just like on “Millionaire,” should time run out, that player will be carried over to the next show.
1b. Should a “carry over” player be unable to attend the next show, he/she will continue the game at the next available session he/she will be able to attend. This player also has the option of “walking away” at the current prize money level attained before the game stopped.

2. Once a contestant has appeared in the Hot Seat, he/she is ineligible to play until the next show.
2b. “Carry over” contestants will be eligible to appear in the hot seat again on the day they return to finish their previous game.

3. Should any disputes about questions arise, take them up with the host after the show. If you can find three sources (or one good source) that prove the question as incorrect, the game will resume with the contestant at the same level as the bogus question, and any lifelines used on that question will be given back to the player.

4. Should an audience member offer advice on how to answer a question, or give a direct answer or hint of some sort, it will be immediately thrown out and a substitute question at the same level will be put in. After one warning, the audience member will be banned for the day, and for a third offense, will be banned permanently from the show.

5. Should a contestant become disconnected during a question, the game will be put on hold for a maximum of 5 (five) minutes to wait for the contestant to reconnect. If he/she does not reconnect during this time, a new Fastest-Finger round and game will be played. The disconnected contestant will either finish his/her game at the end of the current show (if time permits) or on the next week’s show.

5. Host’s decision is final for all disputes. They don’t happen often, but when they do I will do by best to be fair to all parties involved. Host also reserves the right to adjust or add rules in between shows as needed.

FAQ

Q: How do you determine the questions that come up for each player?

A: All questions for WWTBKOTPL are assigned a dollar amount according to difficulty and put into a large database. Randomly, one question from each “level” are put together to form a “game” of 11 questions for a contestant to play.

Q: Are there any regulations about the types of questions that come up?

A: Before each game, the host checks that there are not 3 questions about the same film, or TLKOB, back-to-back. If this occurs, the host will randomly swap out one of the three questions to another question with a different topic.

As far as the types of questions, they are very broad and may cover anything related to the respective films: Artistic details in particular scenes, character’s lines, music, or even behind-the-scenes things like trivia about the voice actors, animators or producers that worked on the film. There will also be questions that will not be directly related to the three TLK films or TLKOB: Other media like TLK books (i.e. the TLK: Six New Adventures set), TV programs or soundtracks are all fair game.

If anyone has any more questions about the show or the rules (or if I missed something), please email me and I will do my best to answer them. I’m excited to be your host for Who Wants to Be King of the Pride Lands, and I can’t wait to start giving away virtual dollars and seeing how much you guys know about The Lion King!
